Nothing Last Forever - Great Sewing Blogs No Longer Posting

In an ongoing effort to organize and simplify my life, I decided to go through the blogs I'm following and retire from my list any that have not posted in over a year.  I was sad to see that some inspiring bloggers are not longer blogging.  I understand that life changes and I hope all of these bloggers are moving on and up to better things.

In an effort not to lose the links to some great posts, I am listing the retired blogs here and a few examples of postings.  I do hope they do not disappear into cyberspace.

Butterick, McCall's and Vogue Pattern Sale through Wednesday and Michaels Coupons

I stumbled on this sale when looking for details on a specific pattern. It started on Sunday the 21st and ends Wednesday the 24th. Many patterns are $2.99 each, excluding the out-of-print patterns. Here is the link.

Vogue Patterns are on sale for $3.99 each during the same days. Here is the link. Even the Vintage Vogue patterns are on sale.

And yes, McCall's is offering the same sale with patterns for $2.99 each. Start here.

I've included photos of one of the patterns I am buying - Vintage Vogue 1136 circa 1945. I wasn't impressed with the renderings of the pattern on the envelope but, when I saw the photos, I changed my mind. I love the way the jacket falls and the details on the back of the dress.

Also, this week, through August 21st, you can print a coupon for 40% Off one regular price item and a coupon for 50% Off one regular price baking item.

Hand-Finishing Your Dress Tutorial ... HEARTH Collection at Cornell

The HEARTH Collection at Cornell University is a wonderful online resource for vintage sewing, cooking, crafting and all things Home Economics.  If you haven't discovered it, I hope you will check it out.

Though I was researching as earlier era, I came across this bulletin from 1948, Hand Finishing Your Dress.  I read through the article and loved how much basic information and instruction it imparted in only four pages.  So, here it is.

Dating Vintage Patterns ...Finding Your Era

I am beginning a list of vintage patterns to help myself and others date patterns we find.  Though it is often easy to determine the decade, even to date the pattern within a five years, it is often a challenge to determine the year.  So, as I find patterns or ads, I will add them to the list below to serve as a guide.

Though this list only has a few companies now, I hope to continue to make it more inclusive over time and include:

Advance                                      Marian Martin
Anne Adams                                McCall (McCall's)
Butterick                                      New York
Du Barry                                      Pictorial Review
Excella                                        Standard
Hollywood                                    Simplicity
Ladies' Home Journal                    Vogue

Edwardian and WWI Eras ... A Little Inspiration

I just needed a little inspiration and sought them in some of my favorite fashion years. I thought I'd share them with you in hopes that you find a little inspiration too.

I found these illustrations on the NYPL Digital Gallery site. It is a terrific resource.

I love these color illustrations as they offer wonderful insights into the color combinations and prints of the times.

Inspirational Quote ... You Can Make a Difference!

 Emily Dickinson at Age 16
circa 1846/47

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
          ~Emily Dickinson

 Unconfirmed Photo - circa 1862

I read this poem when I am feeling like I'm not doing enough, when I am frustrated by life or just overwhelmed.  Though I know I want and need to do more than one good thing in my life, this poem helps me to remember that if I do more good than harm in my life, it will not have been in vain.

I may never be great, but I will strive to make the world better for having lived in it.

What inspires you?

Time for a Little Crafting - A Beaded Bun Cover

I finally took a bit of time to work on my beading and made this little bun cover. My hair is long but pretty thin, so this covers a bun the size about 1/2 of a tennis ball.

I'm also working on the design for a larger cover to fit buns made of longer and thicker hair.

If you're interested in the pattern, please go here.

Those Lovely Edwardian Blouses - In Praise of Mary Brooks Picken and the Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences

As a vintage sewing enthusiasts, I am sure I am not alone in being somewhat intimidated by patterns and sewing techniques of the past. Those wonderful vintage patterns of the early 20th century often assume a knowledge I do not possess.

Enter the wonderful Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences and the brilliant Mary Brooks Pickens, whose instructional booklets are a real find. If you have any other them in your sewing collection, you know what a treasure they are. As they are designed for young women learning the art of sewing, they an excellent tool for the 21st century seamstress and seamster.

I have been lucky enough to find a few of these books at thrift stores and one very lucky eBay auction win. One for my favorites is: Tailored and Lingerie Blouses - Part 2 (I hope to find Part 1 one day). Published in 1921, the designs are from Edwardian Era and include blouses that could have been worn in the 1900's or 1910s. I hope you enjoy these images from the book.

I have started photographing and scanning my copies and I am offering .pdf copies on eBay. If you are interested in the content of these books, rather than in collecting the originals, I hope you will take a look at those I have on offer here. This is a slow process but I hope to get all of them finished and available by the end of summer.

Can't you just imagine wearing one of these beautiful blouses to a garden party or dinner party?

La Belle Epoque, Edwardian and WWI Eras ... Sewing Inspiration from Photos and Portraits Past

Another sleepless night; I started surfing for inspiration and found some great photographs and portraits. Though the details are not always as clear as the ads from these eras, I love seeing the women and fashions against the backdrops of the times.

<-- c. 1902 Princess Irene of Hesse from Ann Lauren's blog.

c. 1902 Winifred Duchess of Portland. The collar of her dress looks as if it was inspired by the Elizabethan Era. I wonder what it was made of. It looks so delicate. -->

<-- c. 1905 Portrait of Maria of Romania. I think this gown looks so romantic and relatively comfortable, considering the era.

c. 1908 Mrs. George Jay Gould with her maid. Even the servants of the day seemed to take care and time with their own hair. How did they find the time? -->

^ c. 1910 Les Createurs de La Mode - 9 Salon de Vente - Doucet from Edwardian Era.

<-- c. 1910 Deux Createurs de La Mode, also from Edwardian Era. Please check this site. There are great images on it.

c. 1910's Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna the Younger. -->

<-- c. 1913

c. 1914 Princess Irina of Russia in her Wedding Gown. -->

<-- c. 1915 Quilted Silk on Chiffon Dress from the Library of Congress Bain Collection. This is another terrific resource.

c. 1915 Mrs James McCresap and Bridesmaids from the NYPL Digital Gallery. I wonder why the bride looks so sad. -->
